Coeur d'Alene II

This is a city with very quickly very changeable weather. Cycled through rain and wind and chill and bright sunshine and back again today, mostly staying in the chilly overcast direction. I turned down the opportunity to take the lake cruise on the upper deck, a wise decision as one of the rain cycles made an appearance during the cruise.

The photo shows how overcast it was and how choppy the water.

One highlight of the lake is the first floating golf green in the country. The length of the hole that ends on the floating green can be anywhere from 75 to 175 yards, and it is moved to a different location every day. Despite the loss of over 2400 balls attempting the hole each year, there are also 4 or 5 holes-in-one.

There was a farmers' market in downtown this afternoon. Nothing demonstrates the difference between latitudes like the amount of fresh vegetables available here and in Chapel Hill. The offerings here were pretty skimpy: mostly tomato seedlings and a few radishes.

I met an online writing teacher at the CSE meeting in Seattle who talked about her planned trip to Vermont and Maine in September. She and her husband have a 17' panel truck that they pack with kayaks and bicycles for their vacations. When I asked if they were prepared for the hills of Vermont, she admitted that their bikes have electric assist. Good thinking.

On to Kalispell, Montana, tomorrow.
