
I recommend the underground tour of Seattle. Irreverent and a good historical overview. Learned about the disadvantages of having a sewer system that was based on gravity AND 8 feet lower than Elliott Bay at high tide. The photo is of a wooden sewer pipe dating to the 1890s. Part of the charm of the underground tour.
Prostitutes were plentiful and they were each taxed, providing 85% of the city's annual revenues. The head madam left half a million dollars to the public schools, the largest supporter of them until Bill Gates came along.
