Went on a short excursion to Tillicum Village on Blake Island in Puget Sound today. It was a worthwhile way to spend the middle of the day, with a salmon lunch (the photo shows filleted salmon on cedar spits surrounding a coal fire), a short Native American show, and an opportunity to walk around the grounds before the cruise back to Seattle.

Native masks used in the show, which weigh up to 40 pounds, are carved onsite, taking 6-7 months apiece. Two photos demonstrate a smaller mask about one month from completion.

We revisited Pike Place Market, witnessed the famous fish tossing, debated purchasing some salmon to be sent home (and decided against it), and returned to the Steinbrueck gallery for another look at the Rande Cook exhibit. One of his cedar carvings is in the photo.

The Council of Science Editors annual meeting begins tomorrow morning.
